Why see a Psychologist?

January 6th, 2025 by Janet Chen

There are many mental health professionals that treat emotional and behavioral problems; however, they have different levels of education, training and experience.  They also have varied approaches to providing care.

According to David Janeway D.O. in the 2021 Psychology Today article, “How to Choose the Right Therapist,” he states that psychologists have the most extensive graduate training.  He says that while psychologists are therapists, they can also perform psychological testing for developmental disabilities, dementia and ADD and other conditions when one is looking to clarify a diagnosis.

Psychologists have extensive training in abnormal psychology including anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, addictions and other serious mental illnesses.  They are trained to administer various assessments or testing instruments to help with diagnosis.  They also may have advanced training in many types of therapies such as psychoanalysis, cognitive behavioral therapy, marital counseling, addiction, career counseling, etc.

Psychologists may use a variety of evidence-based practices to help people change.  They consider how thoughts, behaviors and emotions impact one’s adjustment in the environment.  They may also use more holistic approaches.

It usually costs more to see a psychologist due to their extensive education and training.

There might be a longer waiting period to see a psychologist due to high demand for their specialized services.

When selecting a mental health professional, you might consider their education, professional credentials and licensing.  You should also find someone you are comfortable with to build a trusting, strong, and effective working relationship.
